SPCA Wake has been rescuing pets and serving central NC for 50+ years. We believe the best outcome for pets is to stay in their homes in the arms of their families who love them. Why should something like financial hardship result in the breaking up of a family? This only leads to broken hearts and another pet in the already-crowded shelter system — one more pet needing the attention and resources of an entirely new family when they already had one in the first place. It makes no sense.
We realized that the best way to help the pets and people in our community and to save the lives of at-risk shelter pets, we need to help the people who love them. And thus, the Community Initiatives team was born! Watch this inspiring short video below and learn all about the different ways your support is helping pets and people in creative and exciting new ways.
Saving Pets by Helping Families — Community Initiatives (Part 1/6)
Our Community Initiatives programs are forward-focused, people-oriented programs designed to tackle pet-related issues at the cause in order to support families before their pets end up in shelters. Your support goes right back into our community by providing low-cost microchip & vaccine clinics, pet food assistance for low-income households, a Pet Helpline to answer any pet-related question or need, colony cat management to help curb cat overpopulation, and an exciting new partnership to provide pet food to the clients of Meals on Wheels of Wake County!
In 2021, the C.I. team answered over 61,000 calls for help and provided over 115,000 pet meals for families in need. It provided low-cost wellness clinics for the community and assisted with the affordable sterilizations of unowned cats from all over the Triangle.
Hundreds of pet owners attended SPCA Wake's most recent low-cost wellness clinic so they could provide their pets with essential care like Rabies vaccines and microchips.
Channah W. smiles with her dog Asha and cat Marmalade, her beloved pets who are able to stay in their home and out of the shelter thanks to pet food assistance programs made possible by your support.
Watch the full short video above to hear from Channah W., a local pet owner living with a fixed income, who feared she would have to surrender her beloved dog Asha and cat Marmalade to the animal shelter due to the rising costs of pet food. But thanks to your generous support, SPCA Wake's Community Initiatives team was able to step in and provide pet food and supplies so Channah, Asha, and Marmalade can stay together — as a family.
By donating, you are not only helping unowned pets, you are helping countless families like this, preventing the separation of families, and keeping pets out of the shelter system in the first place.
