SPCA Wake Receives Grey Muzzle Grant to Support Senior Dog Adoptions

The SPCA of Wake County is thrilled to share that we’ve received a grant to help senior dogs go from the shelter floor to loving homes!

When elderly dogs enter the shelter system, it always tugs at our heartstrings. We want their final chapter to be written in the comfort of a loving home, not in a shelter kennel. Unfortunately, advanced age and medical ailments can be a barrier to adoption and it can often take senior dogs much longer to find homes than their younger counterparts. That’s why we’re so excited to announce a generous grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization!

This grant helps create more happy endings for senior dogs by:

  • Waiving adoption fees for ALL senior dogs (age 7+) for a full year
  • Providing a special medical fund to cover veterinary care for senior dogs while they are at SPCA Wake

With this grant, SPCA Wake can provide additional veterinary care to senior dogs, such as dental care and bloodwork. Since senior dogs are often overlooked due to concerns over unknown medical issues, this grant will help remove some uncertainty, empower adopters, reduce barriers to senior dog adoption, and help minimize their time in the shelter.

Forrest is one of the dogs already benefiting from this grant. At 7-years-old, Forrest has been struggling with heart issues secondary to heart-worm disease and genetic factors. The funding provided by The Grey Muzzle Organization allowed our team to run a full cardiac workup for Forrest. This will help our veterinary staff (and Forrest’s incredible foster parents) provide the best care possible for him and allow future adopters to be more fully informed on Forrest’s health.

“We are so grateful for our partnership with The Grey Muzzle Organization,” says Gwyn Schuler, Donor Relations Manager. “This grant will truly change the lives and trajectories of these incredible dogs, who are so often overlooked. We are so excited to see the impact on our dog population here at SPCA Wake."
