July 4th Puts Pets at Risk: How to Protect Your Pets During the Fireworks

Fireworks can be terrifying for pets, leading to a massive increase in animals escaping and becoming lost or injured.

While we may enjoy fireworks and festivities, our pets often don’t, resulting in thousands of pets going missing every year as they attempt to flee the loud bangs and booms brought on by the holiday. Even pets that normally wouldn’t run away can be frightened by fireworks, becoming lost or injured as they try to find safety from the scary noises.

That’s why we’re asking our community to plan ahead and take simple, thoughtful steps to keep your furry family members safe this Independence Day.

Why Fireworks Are a Big Deal for Pets

You may enjoy the dazzling lights and booming sounds, but most animals don’t understand what’s happening. To them, it can feel like the world is ending. Many pets suffer from anxiety triggered by loud noises, and it’s not uncommon for even calm, confident animals to react fearfully during fireworks displays.

According to national independent nonprofit Shelter Animals Count, “the days surrounding the Fourth of July consistently bring in the highest surge in stray dog intakes each year”. With local shelters already full, this puts added strain on maxed out space and resources which can result in shelter pet euthanasias. In other words, July 4th impacts a lot of pets and the influx of lost pets makes a tough situation even harder for shelters and pet owners alike.

How to Keep Pets Safe This July 4th

Thankfully, a little preparation can go a long way. Here are some easy, effective ways to protect your pets during the holiday:

    • Keep pets indoors during firework displays — even if they normally enjoy hanging out in the yard or going for walks.
    • Check your pet’s ID tags and microchip information to make sure everything is up to date. This will increase your chances of a quick reunion in the unfortunate event they get loose.
    • Expect fireworks on days leading up to and following July 4th. Start your safety precautions early and be extra mindful of your surroundings when you’re out with your pet.
    • If you’re hosting guests, keep pets in a secure, quiet room to prevent escapes. Make sure guests know where the pet is located and to not enter that space or let them out.
    • Talk to your veterinarian about calming options such as anxiety medications, supplements, or Thundershirts if your pet is especially anxious.
    • Play background noise like a radio, television, or a soothing playlist to help mask the sound of fireworks.
    • Offer a special treat or toy to help keep your pet occupied during the noise. We are big fans of peanut butter Kongs and puzzle feeders!
