A Little Swimmer with a Big Heart
When Phelps and his family arrived at SPCA Wake, they came from one of our high-intake transfer partners — a shelter working tirelessly to care for animals despite overwhelming pet overpopulation in their area. His mom and littermates were all healthy and happy, but Phelps stood out right away.
The tiny orange fluffball had something called Swimmer Syndrome, a condition that causes a kitten’s legs to splay out to the sides, making it hard for them to stand or walk. Without help, kittens like Phelps can struggle to grow strong enough to move normally or keep up with their siblings.
But from the very beginning, Phelps’ spark was impossible to miss. He wanted to play. He wanted to run. He wanted to live life just like any other kitten. He just needed a little extra help.

The Road to Recovery
Our veterinary team quickly came up with a treatment plan to give Phelps the best chance at a normal, happy life. He and his family were placed in an experienced foster home, where every day became a mini physical therapy session.
His foster parents gently taped his legs in place — a bit like splints — to encourage proper alignment and help him build muscle strength. Between sessions, Phelps did what he does best: purring, playing, and soaking up every ounce of love he could get.
The results have been nothing short of inspiring. Each day, Phelps grew stronger and more confident on his paws. What started as slow, wobbly steps soon turned into curious trots… and then joyful dashes across the room after his siblings.
On His Way to Great Things
Today, Phelps is thriving — a fluffy orange blur of energy and enthusiasm! He can now run, climb, and even zip up and down the stairs with his brothers and sisters. He may have started life with a few extra challenges, but his determination (and a little help from his foster family) have made him unstoppable.
Phelps’ journey is a reminder that with compassion, creativity, and care, even the smallest lives can overcome the biggest obstacles. His story began in a crowded shelter where hope was hard to come by, but now, it’s filled with playtime, cuddles, and the promise of a bright future.
To every foster, volunteer, and supporter who helps kittens like Phelps find their footing — thank you. Because of you, tiny paws that once struggled to stand can now run, climb, and race toward a happy future.
