When adoption day comes and a pet leaves through our doors, it’s only the beginning of a lasting, positive impact. That pet will go on to touch hearts, share joy, and for many, bring a sense of hope and purpose. These adopters are our neighbors, friends, and colleagues — and the day they head home with a new best friend in tow can completely change that adopter’s outlook on life.

Take it from Matthew, a US Army veteran and SPCA Wake adopter who sent us this moving adoption update:

Being a member in the NC Army National Guard, I found it tough coming home and adjusting to normal civilian life. Then with COVID-19, I found myself isolated and depressed with no motivation at all. Every day became a battle. But the Guard recommended I reach out to my local shelter, and SPCA Wake is where I met my best friend Ace.

Looking back on the professionalism, care, and support the SPCA had given Ace as well as myself, I have full confidence that this was the best decision of my life.

Now, two years later, I’ve made so many memories, received the care and support I needed, and feel as if I am constantly becoming a better version of myself because of Ace.

Thank you for taking care of Ace and giving him a second chance.

Adopter and Army veteran Matthew takes SPCA alum Ace on bonding trips and adventures where they can both enjoy the outdoors.

You are not only saving the lives of pets in our community, you’re bringing a source of comfort, healing, and purpose to the people who call them family. As we go about our lives, we may pass these families every day without knowing it, but this remains true — your support is lifting spirits and brightening lives near and far. Thank you for making the world a better place for pets and people alike.

Matthew and Ace make the most of the “dog days” of summer with trips to the Carolina coast.

Life is better with a smiling face by your side, and thanks to your support, Matthew and Ace get to go through each day together, as a team.
