When the Call Comes, We Move

It was a call we never hope to receive—but one we were ready for. Within an hour of receiving a desperate call for help, SPCA Wake staff joined Raleigh Animal Control in the front yard of an unassuming Wake County home. Inside, a shocking scene unfolded: 101 dogs living in heartbreaking conditions.

The air was thick with the stifling smell of waste. Some of the dogs were crowded together, five or six to a cage, stacked one on top of another. Others navigated tight, unsanitary spaces, with little room to move. It was clear these dogs had gone far too long without the care every animal deserves. There were even mother dogs tending to newborn puppies, doing their best to nurture them in the only world they’d ever known.

In situations like this, there’s no time to hesitate. Our team moved quickly - preparing our transport vans, medical supplies, and kennels to take in as many dogs as possible.

By the end of the day, 19 dogs were safely in our care at SPCA Wake, each one clinging to a new chance at life.

The First Tastes of Freedom

In the hours that followed, something remarkable began to happen.

As our medical team got to work, assessing each dog and tending to years of neglect, the burdens these dogs had carried began to fall away—quite literally.

Matted fur came off in clunky piles, years of dirt and discomfort giving way to clean coats and relieved skin. We identified infections, dental issues, and overgrown nails—and gave them their first warm baths, cozy beds, and meals they didn’t have to compete for.

Little tails started to wag, and the beginnings of hopeful, grateful expressions emerged on faces once clouded by uncertainty.

Dogs who had only known cages cautiously sniffed at the grass beneath their feet and turned their faces to the sun. We witnessed their first smiles.

A Long Road

The work is far from over. These dogs are beginning what will likely be a long journey of healing, both physically and emotionally. But for the first time, they’re no longer numbers in a breeding operation. They’re individuals with names, personalities, and futures. And their futures are possible because of you.

This rescue is one of the largest our team has faced in recent years, and the need for ongoing care is immense. Right now, your donations are being matched dollar for dollar in donated veterinary services from Care First Animal Hospital—up to $150,000. That means every dollar you give will go twice as far in changing the lives of these dogs and other animals like them.

Donate now and be part of their new beginning.Thank you for being a force for good when it is needed most. Together, we are giving these dogs—and so many others—the second chance they’ve always deserved.
