The Fourth of July pet safety is key to making sure the holiday is fun and festive, while keeping your pets cool, calm and safely secure. While the holiday is full of reasons to celebrate... but keep in mind, your dog or cat has no idea why the sky suddenly started exploding.

Thankfully, not every Fourth of July story is a stressful one.

Just look at SPCA alum Chanel (pictured above). Once confined to a tiny pen while caring for her newborn puppies, she's now living her best life, rocking star-spangled shades, chowing down on hot dogs, and celebrating the holiday with the family who loves her before the fireworks begin!

The truth is, the days surrounding Independence Day bring one of the biggest spikes in lost pets every year. Even pets who have never wandered before can panic, bolt through an open door, or jump a fence when fireworks start.

The good news? A little planning goes a long way.

Here are a few quick ways to help keep your pets safe:

• Keep pets safely indoors during fireworks.
• Double-check ID tags and microchip information.
• Create a cozy, quiet room with music or the TV to help mask the noise.
• Break out a favorite Kong, puzzle toy, or special treat for a positive distraction.
• If your pet gets especially anxious, ask your veterinarian about calming options before the holiday.
