All veterinary externship positions for 2025 at the SPCA of Wake County have been filled.

About veterinary externships at SPCA Wake:

The externships are available for veterinary students in their clinical (4th) year of vet school.

Chosen candidates will work under the supervision of a veterinarian as they gain experience in managing medical, surgical, and behavioral cases in a shelter environment. Mentorship under Samantha Zurlinden, DVM will help the next generation of veterinarians gain insight into shelter medicine and shelter operations.

If chosen, applicants must be willing to pay a fee of $25 to the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board for a veterinary intern permit to work under our veterinarian and sign a liability waiver through the SPCA of Wake County.
