Not Your Average Traffic Stop
Darting around a highway barrier with cars whizzing by at seventy miles per hour is just about the worst place a kitten could be. It’s a stomach-dropping sight that made Wake County Deputy Devin Richardson’s blood run cold. “All I saw was a tiny thing running up the highway and unable to escape from the roadway,” Devin told us.
After swerving to avoid hitting her, Devin pulled over and turned on his emergency lights so he could redirect traffic as he ran back down the highway.
“I could hear the kitten meowing, tucked under a cut-out section of the concrete barrier,” said Devin. “I was able to grab the kitten before she ran out into the roadway.”
As their heart rates calmed down and the kitten was safe in the relative quiet of Devin’s police vehicle, she slowly began to settle. Tucked up in a towel on her way to our partners at the Wake County Animal Center, she offered some grateful little meows.
A New Beginning
The kitten had to stay at that shelter for a few days – a legal requirement for all found and stray animals in the county. The whole time, Devin couldn’t get her off his mind.
When no owner came to claim her, the kitten – temporarily named Fairy – still faced an uphill battle. She was still too young to be placed up for adoption, so our partners at the Wake County municipal shelter reached out to SPCA Wake to help the kitten. Thankfully, your support is the reason our doors are open to pets in this predicament every day – and this time, it was Fairy.
For the next month, Fairy enjoyed rest and relaxation at SPCA Wake, where your support provided her with the food, medicine, and wellness care she needed. Before we knew it, Fairy was ready to go up for adoption – and that adoption was already written in the stars.
Adoption Day Destiny
Devin patiently followed the little kitten throughout her journey through the shelter system. The moment Fairy became available for adoption, Devin was first in line to take her home.
“She was going to be named Trooper, but my wife liked Willow – so we ‘compromised’ and named her Willow,” he laughed.
With your help, Willow’s entire world has been upended in the best possible way. Today, she is deeply loved and spoiled as she deserves, and even has some cat friends to show her the ropes around her new home.
