Our mission at the SPCA is to create a more humane community where every adoptable animal has a home. Yes, we are an animal welfare organization, but we are also an organization passionate about people.
We hear sad stories and happy stories. Sometimes the heartache is for a dog or cat who had a rough start or bad past and thinks all humans are unkind. Sometimes it’s the humans forced to say good-bye to their furry family member when life throws some unexpected punches. We are here for both.
Melissa first adopted Cadet from the SPCA of Wake County in May of 2011. We took him in from the Johnston County Animal Shelter at the time. The two fell in love quickly.
Since that time Melissa also added Rocky to the family. Both dogs have worked as therapy dogs and Rocky earned both his Canine Good Citizen and Community Canine certifications.
Melissa recently reached out to the SPCA of Wake County about finding a new home for her two pups. She writes, “It is with a very heavy heart that I begin a search to find a new home for my boys, Cadet and Rocky. I have to move closer to family due to my metastatic breast cancer [and] am unable to have Cadet and Rocky. That is the only reason they need a new home.”
Not only is Melissa a military veteran, but she this is her third time battling cancer. She knows how to fight and after fighting for our country and for her life, she was ready to fight to find a safe and loving home for her beloved dogs.
The SPCA took in both dogs earlier this week and Rocky has already found a new family. Cadet is now waiting his turn. He is a six-year-old hound mix who can be selective about his dog friends and prefers a cat-free home. He is best with older children. He is an energetic dog that loves to play outside, particularly in the snow! And he may have that chance this weekend as the Triangle expects winter weather.
