NEW VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION

Thank you for your interest in volunteering! You are about to embark on this journey, and you are going to learn a lot of information about the basics of the volunteer program.  But, you are never alone, and we are here to support you throughout your journey of being a volunteer.  The SPCA is a special place where everyone who comes through our doors belongs here.  So, whatever inspired you to volunteer, please know we cannot wait to be inspired by you and work with you.

The gratitude we feel towards our volunteers can never truly be placed into words, and we hope that no matter what life brings that when you are here, you feel valued, appreciated, and loved. Because we really do love our volunteers, and we cannot do this without them!

IMPORTANT:

Unfortunately, we are not currently able to accommodate:

  • Court-ordered or lawyer-recommended community service
  • Group volunteering
  • Short-term volunteer opportunities

 

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must commit to volunteering at least 25 hours per year(one shift per month).
  • Must have consistent access to the internet and email.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to work well with others and independently (without supervision).
  • Must attend a New Volunteer Orientation and sign a waiver before volunteering.
  • We are not accepting Youth-Adult Teams at this time.

In order to become a member of the SPCA volunteer team and family, you will need to complete the following items.  Please ensure that you are watching the orientation videos completely and completing any surveys that are on this page. Thank you!

We are so excited to welcome you to the first of five modules for the New Volunteer Orientation!

Are you ready? We are!

In this step, you will learn about the SPCA's Volunteer opportunities! We have plenty to choose from, and there is something for everyone. We are so excited to share these opportunities with you!!  This module will walk you through the shifts and steps you will need to take in order to complete the training for the team assignment or assignments that you are interested in.  Please have the Volunteer Team Assignment List handy to mark which assignment you're most interested in!

The next step is shelter safety.

You are one step closer to becoming an SPCA Volunteer!

In this step will, you will learn about our safety protocols! These are very important to follow, as the safety of the pets and people at the SPCA is our top priority.

Once you have completed and submitted the Survey, you can move on to the next step and take a tour with the Director of Volunteers!

Do you agree to report to a staff member promptly if you witness or sustain an animal bite? By law, all animal bites must be reported. Remember, that any animal's tooth breaking human skin is considered a bite.
Do you understand that volunteers are not allowed to take animals out their kennels, cages, tubs, and/or enter a dog bedroom without staff supervision until they have completed their online course modules and a shadow session with a Lead/Mentor Volunteer or Staff Member?
Do you understand Staff-only animals (including purple/pink stars) may not be handled by volunteers?
Do you agree to note non-emergency health issues (coughing, swollen eye, etc.) on whiteboard outside Treatment Room and to report urgent health issues (bleeding, trouble breathing, etc.) to staff immediately?
Do you agree to stay up-to-date with updates in protocols?
Do you agree to follow all instructions from the Director of Volunteers, Staff and Lead Volunteers?
Do you agree to assist us in ensuring that the SPCA is a safe and fun place to work and volunteer?
Do you agree to adhere to the required attire of a t-shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes?

Let's Take a Tour of the Pet Adoption Center!

In this module, we will be taking you on a tour of the Pet Adoption Center. You will learn where things are, don't worry when you come in to train for the assignment you want to do, we will show you around. This is just to get you acquainted with our building and show you where you may be volunteering and spending your time during your shift.

Volgistics is our Self-Scheduling Volunteer Management Software here you can schedule yourself for trainings and shifts.  

*The Volunteer Director will be unable to schedule each individual volunteer for training sessions or classes, if you are having trouble viewing the open shadow training sessions or in-person training, your account may not be updated, please reach out to the Director if this is occurring, otherwise, please utilize this tool to schedule your training sessions and classes.

  • Once your Application and DocuSign Waiver have been processed, you’ll receive a link to set up your account (good for 24 hours).

Volunteer Team Assignments Required Training(s)

  1. Whether the Volunteer Team Assignment requires one-step training, which includes online and in-person training classes or two-step training (See the Volunteer Team Assignment Document for more information), once you have completed the requirements for that assignment, your account will be updated to reflect that you have completed the training(s).
  • If your assignment requires 2-step training, once you have completed the training and submitted the survey, your account will be updated and you will be able to view the Shadow Training Sessions available!
  • Once you have completed the training requirements, your account will be updated which will allow you to start signing up for shifts

  • Once you complete the video below, please fill out and submit the Volunteer Application below.
  • Make sure that you click on the button marked “Waiver” to be directed to the DocuSign Waiver.
  • Once your Application is processed and we receive the DocuSign Waiver, you will receive the "Getting Started" email.
    • Please allow 5-7 days to process your application and DocuSign Waiver.  After both of those are processed, you will be able to view Volgistics and then start scheduling shifts or Shadow Training Sessions once you have completed the Assignment Course you are interested in!

  •  A confirmation email letting you know that you submitted your application.
  • You will receive the "Getting Started" email after completing the application below.  The email will contain more information about the program, links to Volgisitcs Training and is your confirmation that your application was submitted successfully.
  • You will receive another email from Volgistics with login information!
  • Please allow 5-7 days to process your application and  DocuSign Waiver.  After both of those are processed, you will be able to view Volgistics and then start scheduling shifts or Shadow Training Sessions once you have completed the Assignment Course you are interested in!
